Woman in the island of Karpathos is considered as the backbone of every family. Men during past years were seeking work in foreign lands and the women stayed behind taking on all tasks: To cultivate the fields, to work in the windmills, to weave, to take care of the house and raise the children. This is why women of Olympos, who still wear daily their traditional costumes, are characterized for their bravery and pride, and the key role which they played in this small community contributing greatly to the preservation of the traditional customs of the island.
